Before the Storm: How to Prepare a Saltwater Spa for a Power Outage

power outage
A power outage can be a spa owner’s worst nightmare, especially if the outage is caused by a storm, which opens up the possibility of dealing with costly damage to their spa. If a saltwater spa’s equipment can’t run, it can quickly lead to disaster for both the water’s chemical balance as well as the equipment. How can spa owners prepare a saltwater spa for a power outage? That’s a great question. Here are a few things you can share with your saltwater spa customers to prepare them for a power outage, as well as some helpful advice to get their saltwater spas back on track.

How to Prepare a Saltwater Spa for a Power Outage

If a storm is on the horizon with the potential to cause a power outage, there are a few things spa owners can do to prepare:

1. Add Fresh Water

Before a power outage, saltwater spa owners should ensure that their spas have fresh, clean water. This will help to prevent any issues with the chemical balance in the event that the power is out for an extended period of time.

2. Unplug the Tub

The hot tub itself should be unplugged. This prevents damage from a power surge if the electricity is lost and comes back on, or in the event that power line equipment is hit by lightning.

3. Add a Cover

Adding a cover to a hot tub in the event of bad weather can help to keep debris and dirt out, keeping the water clean and free of contaminants. However, it’s worth noting that if the weather is particularly bad, there is the potential for the cover to become damaged as well, which can be expensive to replace.

Getting a Saltwater Spa Back on Track

Once the power is back on, saltwater spa owners will need to take a few steps to get their spas back up and running. First, all of the equipment should be inspected to make sure that it wasn’t damaged during the power outage. If all looks good, the hot tub can be plugged back in along with the other equipment. The water balance should be checked and adjusted as necessary before the hot tub is used again. If the power outage lasted for more than a few days, it’s best to drain and clean the saltwater spa before refilling. This will help to ensure that the water is fresh and free of contaminants. Once the saltwater spa is refilled and the equipment is running, owners can enjoy their hot tubs once again. Just be sure to take things slowly at first and test the water balance often to avoid any issues.
